The Sanskrit mantra “Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ” is a six-syllabled Sanskrit mantra primarily associated with the four-armed form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. This mantra first appeared in the Mahayana Kāraṇḍavyūha Sutra, also known as the sadaksara (six-syllabled) and paramahrdaya, or the “deepest heart” of Avalokiteshvara. In this sutra, the mantra is seen as a condensed form of all of Buddha’s teachings.
The first word Aum/Om is a sacred syllable in various Indian religions. Mani means “jewel” or “beads”, Padme is “lotus flower” (sacred flower of the East), and Hum symbolizes the spirit of enlightenment.
